Manuel began his professional career in the world of biomedical research where he was granted several scholarships throughout the course of his doctorate.

Manuel subsequently joined the body of Spanish Patent and Trademark Office graduates by open examination, where he practiced as an examiner for 8 years.

In 1993 Manuel joined the firm Elzaburu, which he left in 2007 as a Senior Partner. At that point González-Bueno & Illescas was founded, which in 2013 became MIA.

Manuel serves as a regular speaker at seminars and frequently lectures on industrial property and innovation. He has combined his experience in the world of intellectual property with his interest in research projects in the field of biotechnology through engagement as a shareholder and advisor in several seed capital companies such as Inverbio (2005) and Cross Road Biotech (2007), and as a science director in other companies such as SJT Molecular Research (2013).

Manuel is a member of several organizations and associations, including the Colegio Oficial de Agentes de la Propiedad Industrial de España, the Colegio Oficial de Biólogos de España, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle (FICPI), Asociación de Agentes Españoles autorizados ante Organizaciones Internacionales de Propiedad Industrial e Intelectual (AGESORPI), American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office (EPI).

In 2021, he resumed his independent consulting activity, specializing in Power BI and artificial intelligence (AI). He currently leads Reputational Value, S.L., a company dedicated to providing business information and evaluating the corporate reputation of Spanish companies with the help of AI algorithms. He also holds a stake in 1levelup Consulting, S.L., a boutique firm specialized in achieving excellence in business strategy execution.

José carried out his PhD at Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas (CIB) - Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). After finishing his PhD, he worked at the Biotechnology Innovation Circle, where he drafted competitive intelligence reports in Life Sciences, and as knowledge transfer manager at CSIC.

Since 2010, he worked for the IP law firm Clarke, Modet & Co. In 2017, he joined MIA Patents. At MIA Patents, he focuses his practice on Intellectual Property, including drafting and prosecuting, client counselling, conducting opinion work and advising on IP protection strategies. He has extensive experience in patent drafting and prosecution of European and Spanish patent applications, PCT international applications, foreign patent applications, patentability reports, infringement reports and prosecution of Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPC). He also acted as expert in proceedings before Spanish courts, in pharma and biotech areas.

José has lectured on patent-related issues before universities and institutions, including Association of Biotech companies (ASEBIO), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Biotechnology Degree), and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Biochemistry Degree and Biotechnology Master). He has written several articles published on IP journals and co-authored the chapter about Spain of the book “European SPCs unravelled: A Practitioner’s Guide to Supplementary Protection Certificates in Europe”, which reviews exhaustively the law and practice of SPC in Europe.

He is a member of Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office (EPI) and Colegio Oficial de Químicos de Madrid. He obtained the certificate (Politecnico di Milano) which allows European Patent Attorneys to act before the Unified Patent Court (UPC), expected to start operating during 2023.

Miguel Á. began his professional career in 1992 in the Santillana Group, where he held diverse responsibilities, the most prominent of which being Chief Management Controller of Santillana Ediciones Generales, Chief Financial Officer at Punto de Lectura, Chief Financial Officer at the Instituto Universitario de Posgrado (IUP) and Santillana Formación, and, as of 2011, the position of Global Chief Operations Officer at Santillana Ediciones Generales (PRISA Ediciones) where he participated in the sale of PRISA Ediciones to Penguin Random House (Grupo Bertelsmann).
In 2014 Miguel Á. became Director of Integration for Spain and Latin America at Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, where he remained until 2016.
In 2016 Miguel Á. started his own project with the Panishop franchise, before joining MIA as Chief Financial Officer in 2021.

She began her professional career at the Legal Department in Heinemann Distributor (Reed Elsevier) and took part in the foundation of the publishing house in Spain. Since then she specialized in publishing, management and Intellectual Property, mainly in copyright.
She has been assistant editorial manager at Heinemann Iberia; editorial manager at Alfaguara juvenil; editorial manager at Altea; editorial manager at Punto de Lectura (all companies pertaining to Santillana Publishing Group); general manager at Suma de Letras.
She has given numerous lectures on copyright; she still advises and manages independent authors´ contracts.
Currently she leads the cultural area of the company Unomasdós and manages Letras Redondas. She collaborates with various companies in writing and editing reports, contracts and other business documents; she works as MIAPatents´ off-counsel for Intellectual Property.

José Manuel began his professional activity in 1988 as an auditor and business consultant at Arthur Andersen.
Between 1993 and 2005 José Manuel further developed his career at the firm Elzaburu, initially as a financial-administrative manager and manager of human resources, in order to later go on to also manage administrative proceedings of Spanish and non-Spanish trademark files prosecuted by that firm. During this period, he passed the public examinations necessary to become a Spanish Intellectual Property Agent and carried out work in the valuation of intellectual property rights.
In 2006, José Manuel founded his own business as a franchisee of a prestigious North American chain, combining this activity with his work as a business consultant and interim management tasks. Amongst other collaborations, he carried out valuations and patent license due diligences for the firm González-Bueno & Illescas.
In 2012 José Manuel began to offer financial and legal counsel to Norvento in the renewable energy sector, until 2014 when said company took him in as a financial manager and manager of human resources, and in placed him in charge of their legal division. During this time, he developed his own model for valuation of complex investment projects based on cash flow discount methodology. In 2018 he joined the Bio-Oils Energy group in a similar capacity.
In 2021 José Manuel resumed his own consultancy. Currently he is developing a project in conjunction with a partner for valuation of specific intangible assets based on a computer algorithm. He has also recently participated in seeding a boutique company, 1levelup Consulting, S.L., specialized in achieving excellence in execution of client-established strategy.

Gwendolyn wrote her Ph.D. thesis at the Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences at Ludwig-Maximilians-University (GSN-LMU) in Munich. In 2016 she was admitted as German Patent, Trademark and Design Attorney by the Chamber of German Patent Attorneys. She additionally qualified as European Patent Agent and European Community Union Trademark and Design Agent. In 2021, she earned an LL.M. in European Intellectual Property Law from the Distance Learning University in Hagen, Germany, which allows her to act before the Unified Patent Court, when the EU community patent is in force (expected 2023). Gwendolyn joined MIA Patents in 2022.
She has experience in drafting and prosecuting European and German patent applications, international PCT applications, and various foreign patent applications, as well as patent opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office (EPO). She specializes in inventions in various fields, such as biotechnology, biologics, food and feed industry, chemistry, pharma or cosmetics.
Gwendolyn also has experience in trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings before the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA).
She is a member of Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office (EPI) and member of the Chamber of German Patent Attorneys.

Pedro Duprat

He begins his professional career in 2010 as a paralegal in law firms specialising in civil and commercial law in the city of Buenos Aires (Argentina). Subsequently, he develops his professional career as a junior lawyer in the renowned law firm Monner Sans-Duprat in the city of Buenos Aires, being actively involved in litigation before the Argentinean courts and administrative proceedings before the Institute of Intellectual Property of the Republic of Argentina.

In 2020 lands in Spain to study the Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Intellectual Property and New Technologies at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. In parallel while completing his LL.M. studies, he develops his professional internship in the legal department of Edelvives Group. During this experience, he collaborates with the legal assistance of publishing and technological projects of Edelvives Group. He also provides administrative and technical support in the management of the trademark portfolio.

In 2021 he works as a trademark examiner at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in Alicante (Spain) for trademark registration procedures in English, Spanish and Italian. As a trademark examiner, he develops and consolidates his knowledge in the field of trademarks.

In 2022 joins MIA Patents as a paralegal. In 2023, after passing the bar examination at the Spanish Ministry of Justice and becoming a member of the Madrid Official Bar Association, he starts practicing as a lawyer and advisor in Intellectual Property matters. Pedro has experience in trademarks and designs registration, opposition and cancellation proceedings before the EUIPO and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO), and also in prosecuting international trademarks and designs, before World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), according to Madrid Agreement and the Hague Agreement, respectively.
